David G. Ortiz, Sr., age 55, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on August 1, 2003 to rejoin the Lord our Father in heaven.  David was a Tucson native who was preceded in death by his mother, Socorro; his father, Juan; and his sister Sandra.  He is survived by Anna Araiza Ortiz, his loving wife of 34 years; sons, David (Charlene) and Jaime; granddaughters, Danielle and Veronica; his mother, Martha; 14 loving brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, along with many relatives and friends.

David graduated from Tucson High in 1967 and served honorably in the United States Army Reserves for six years.  He was a passionate saxophone musician and music collector who loved to celebrate life with family and friends.

David retired from Qwest after devoting 31 years of outstanding service.  His smile and comical nature touched many, and with a strong desire to help others, he will always be treasured.

Published in the Arizona Daily Star on August 9, 2005:  Two years have come and gone, still our hearts have your laughter, love and strength.  Remembering 36 years of marriage today and the blessings you gave us.  Your wife and loving family.

From Frank Kingman:  I remember David Ortiz as a soft spoken class act. Played a mean sax. I believe he performed with the Poor Boys. Great personality. He didn't have a mean bone.

David Ortiz and I were in Coach Bailey’s 4th period biology class at THS freshman year.  We sat side by side at the very front table.  David was one of the first classmates I met whom I hadn’t known before from Robison and Peter Howell elementary schools and Mansfeld Jr. High, and I thought he was cute!  I distinctly remember David asking me if I was going to attend The Mixer, the annual beginning-of-the year dance, and if so, if I would dance with him.  We did dance at The Mixer, and even though I don’t remember any other interactions with David except conversations under Coach Bailey’s nose, I always had good feelings about him because of that friendly gesture at the start of the school year in the fall of 1963.
