Memorial services for Gregory Michael Leavitt, 23, a governor of Arizona Boys State in 1967, will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Westminster Presbyterian Church in Phoenix.  Mr. Leavitt, 2031 W. Leavitt of Phoenix; a sister, Mrs. Franklin Broyles of Austin, Texas; a brother, Paul of Richland, Washington, and grandmother, Mrs. Leslie Leavitt of Iola, Kansas.  The family suggests memorial contributions to the Scholarship Fund at the University of Pennsylvania.

Greg was full of surprises for me.  As a sophomore from Yuma this squirt showed up and wanted to play football.  He became a safety on the JV team.  The first time I saw him stand out, he intercepted a pass in the end zone and started to run it out.  I was yelling "take a knee."  Greg didn't listen to me, so I started blocking.  Greg ran around at least 100 yards just to get the ball out to the 20 yard line (which he could have had by falling down at the start).  But he wasn't done yet.  He dodged around for at least another 100 yards and made the TD!  Spring break that year, we hiked together to the top of Mica Mountain (Rincons, the peak straight east on Broadway).  One of the best hikes of my life.

Junior year, despite all of the backs on our team, Greg became a starting safety, and we went undefeated.  That summer at Boy's State, he "settled" as usual and only became Governor.  ;->

Senior year we knew he would be great at safety, but when Eddy Miller moved away, Vince Longo and Boby Morrison got hurt, and others were having fumbling problems, Greg got to start at halfback.  He was adequate and was selected All-State.  :->

I didn't get a chance to see Greg much after Freshman year in college.  My loss.  But he lost his life by falling asleep and rolling a semi-truck.  I imagine he was pushing himself as always.  We're all human.  Love you Greg.
