Joey was a neighbor of mine.  He wasn't good at sports, but he was certainly cooler than I was.  The Currys, Ballards, Bartons, Saxons and more used to live at the park on 23rd street.

We always got along and enjoyed laughs together.  Joe had his troubles, but was super appreciative of friends who helped him when he was down, even if they didn't know it.  He told me there were times when guys were out to get him, so he would see me and just come up and joke with me without saying he was in trouble.  But the other guys didn't come for him then.  At our 40-year reunion, Joey told Melinda that she saved him once.  At Mansfeld a teacher accused him of something like throwing a paper airplane in class.  Joey knew he hadn't done it, he knew who had done it, but Joey wasn't going to tell.  -- Punishment coming in the form of a paddle.  Melinda said she had done it, and she got off with a warning.  Joey loved her for that!  (I found other reasons to love her, but I won't speak for Joey.)

Will miss you at the 50-year, Joey.
